Invisalign 101: 5 Things to Do Before You Start Treatment
March 7, 2025

Starting Invisalign treatment is exciting! After all, your trek to a straighter, healthier smile is about to begin! But before your first clear aligners click into place, a little preparation can go a long way toward making your experience smooth and successful. Keep reading to see five important things you can do to get ready for your clear aligner treatment.
1. Schedule a Dental Checkup
Straighter teeth start with a strong base! Before you can start Invisalign, your dentist will want to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy. If you have any lingering cavities or signs of gum disease, they’ll need to be addressed first. A healthy mouth sets the perfect foundation for your new smile!
2. Improve Your Brushing and Flossing Routine
Invisalign aligners need a clean environment to be effective. If food particles and plaque get trapped under the trays, they can cause decay and stains, delaying your treatment and making your aligners more noticeable. Start practicing brushing after every meal now, so it’s normal by the time your aligners arrive.
3. Stock Up on Supplies
Picking up a few essentials can make your treatment go more smoothly. Next time you head to the store, try to find:
- Cleaning crystals or tablets to keep your trays sparkling and bacteria-free
- Floss and a travel toothbrush to brush on the go, wherever you are
- A storage case to keep your aligners safe whenever you need to remove them (even though your kit comes with one, an extra never hurts to have!)
- Toothpaste for sensitive teeth to help with any discomfort when you start your treatment
Having these items handy can save you from some distress and trips to the store later on.
4. Work on Your Diet
While Invisalign doesn’t come with a list of banned foods like traditional braces, it’s a good idea to start weaning yourself off snacks. You’ll have to remove your trays every time you eat or drink anything other than water. Sticking to regular mealtimes can help you get the timing down.
5. Learn What to Expect
Invisalign treatment is convenient, but it’s not a magic solution. You’ll need to wear your aligners for 20–22 hours a day to stay on track. Prepare yourself mentally for some adjustments to your routine, especially in the first few weeks. The gorgeous grin waiting for you at the end of the road is more than worth it!
Preparing for Invisalign isn’t hard, but taking a few simple steps now can truly set you up for success. Like stretching before a big race, you’ll thank yourself later when the finish line is in sight!
