What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns support dental bridge

A dental crown is a cap designed to be cemented over a troubled tooth while mimicking its natural strength, appearance, and structure. This allows a tooth to be restored to its original beauty and functionality after extensive damage or decay that cannot be resolved with a filling. Crowns are also used to address stained or misshapen teeth or to support dental bridges and cover dental implants. Almost anyone can be a good candidate for dental crowns after a consultation, and they usually only require a normal oral hygiene regimen to stay in good shape.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

Dental crowns are usually placed in as few as two appointments. Once Dr. Nemtseva has determined that a crown is the best course of treatment for you, she will begin the process by numbing the tooth being treated with local anesthetics, rendering the procedure painless. She will then remove any decayed or damaged structure from the tooth, take an impression of it, and place a temporary crown upon it so you can get used to wearing it. We will make sure that you understand the differences between E-Max and zirconia crowns so that you can make an informed decision as to which one is right for you, and the impression will be sent to a lab where a skilled technician will manufacture your customized crown.

When your crown arrives at our office about two weeks later, you’ll come back in to have your temporary one removed and your permanent one cemented in place.

If you put off getting a dental crown for a tooth that needs it, you may experience pain and worsening oral health problems. Dental crowns can provide a range of benefits, including:

  • Allowing the patient to eat and speak comfortably.
  • Protecting your natural teeth to prevent damage, infections, and extractions.
  • Dental crowns are versatile treatments that can protect teeth from injury, help preserve your smile’s alignment, and make it easier to eat a varied and nutritious diet.
  • Our crowns are designed to match the appearance of your real teeth, making them virtually indistinguishable from the rest of your smile.
  • With excellent care, including brushing, flossing, routine checkups, and good chewing habits, your crown may last longer than fifteen years.
